New standalone Star Wars film announced

It has long been in the rumour-mill – ever since Disney bought Lucasfilm – that there would be several spin-off, standalone feature films based in the Star Wars universe. It is presumed that these will focus on fringe characters, such as Boba Fett, or even give us the ‘prequel’ stories of characters like Han Solo and Chewbacca.

It has now been announced that there is a standalone film going into production with a release date of December 16, 2016. Gareth Edwards, director of Godzilla, is set to direct, with the script being written by Gary Whitta. Whitta is best known for writing the screenplays for The Book of Eli and After Earth, neither of which I have seen. However, he was also involved in writing for the award winning TellTale Games production of The Walking Dead.

“Ever since I saw Star Wars I knew exactly what I wanted to do for the rest of my life — join the Rebel Alliance! I could not be more excited and honored to go on this mission with Lucasfilm.” – Gareth Edwards

“From the moment I first saw the original movie as a wide-eyed kid, Star Wars has been the single most profound inspiration to my imagination and to my career as a writer. It is deeply special to me, so to be given the opportunity to contribute to its ongoing legacy, especially in collaboration with a film-maker as talented as Gareth, is literally a dream come true. I’m still pinching myself.” – Gary Whitta

No details about what the film might be focusing on have emerged as yet. We will be watching the news closely in the coming months!
